The  Vermillion County Public Library's Genealogy collection primarily focuses on Vermillion County, Indiana; however, genealogical research can be conducted in surrounding counties including: Parke, Vigo, and Fountain counties in the state of Indiana as well as Edgar and Vermilion counties in the state of Illinois.

Types of Materials:

  • Local High School Yearbooks 
  • Microfilms: Marriage Records, Wills, Probates, Birth Records, Civil Order, and Guardianship.
  • Cemetery Records
  • Indiana State Census
  • Family Books
  • Newport and Dana, Indiana newspapers
  • Vermillion County 

Use of Collection:

The VCPL Genealogy Collection is a non-circulating collection and must be used within the library.

Correspondence:

The Vermillion County Public Library will provide limited research, look-ups, answer genealogy-related questions and provide suggestions. Please remember, we are a small library and genealogy research is done when time is permitted. Genealogy is done by a library staff member and genealogy volunteer genereally on Friday of each week and are answered in the order in which they are received. Please allow up to six (6) weeks for your inquiry to be answered.

Requests can be submitted to the genealogy department by mail, e-mail, through the library website, or telephone.

  • E-mail requests to: vermillion.genealogy@gmail.com (recommended)
  • Library websites requests: Can be submitted on the requests page of the Genealogy page of the VCPL website. (recommended)
  • Telephone requests to: (765) 492-3555 - please note telephone requests are not recommended but may be answered as time and staffing allow. Individuals inquiring by phone may be asked to submit the requests by mail, e-mail, or through the library website. 

Fees:

Genealogy Research Fee: for genealogy inquiries through any format of correspondence there will be a $5.00 fee for the first hour of service. This fee will get each request up to an hour of research. If additional time is required there will be a $15.00 fee per additional hour. If additional time is required patrons will be contacted by a researcher. 

In-house Fees: Photocopies from print materials are $0.10 - $0.50 per page, depending on size. Copies from microfilm materials are $0.50 per pages. Please note these fees stand even if we scan a copy and email the inquirer. 

Additional Fees: Any fees required from obtaining documentation from facilities such as the Health Department, Court House, etc will be requested as reimbursement to the Genealogy Department.  

Mileage: for genealogy inquiries that require traveling there will be a $0.51 a mile charge.
